Here's a thread to post helpful Windows 7 tips and links:

Since I hate the girly color schemes that come with it, my first order of business was to change it ASAP.

Themes:

Speedup:

Search:

Sucks.  Use NotePad++ to search-in-files and even search-and-replace-in-files.

NotePad++:

Have to install using the "Don't use %%APP..." option, otherwise, you cannot edit your syntax highlighting files because MS decided to make that location inaccessible...

Fraps:

If you get low FPS, install the latest Fraps for W7.  Fixed mine.

Tab away from BZ2 in the shell and right-click on the speaker in your tray (lower right), then left-click on Volume Mixer and you will see volume sliders for all your apps running that use sound, including BZ2.

Gosh W7 search sucks...

See here for how to make it search inside files.  ODF files are set to search external name only.

I dont know how stable it is or anything like that, but the number of 'basic' calls from people that just cant find their way around in W7 is .. er .. interesting ... Smiley

I never have them on XP. I dont think that has to do with an OS, but more with your hardware ...

Does anyone know how to set it in Windows7 so that all programs run as administrator.

Like, I download a exe, never touched it before. And run it, It autoruns (Just like all other exe's) as an adminstrator

How do I set that?

Purplehaze, that would pose a security risk, so you're best bet is to manually, each time, run any program that needs admin access. Most software don't need, and only certain ones do. (like those that don't install correctly otherwise, or something)

I currently use an older computer Intel MB with Pentium 4 CPU at 3 ghz 2 gig ram. It works ok but ,,,,you know,,,, heh. I use Win XP Pro and my son has one of those el'cheapo Walmart computers from Emachines running windows 7 64 bit.
Linux OS by comparison has pretty strict file security but it never interferes with program operations, even on older programs.
Now comes Windows 7 with an abstract filing system which seems to compare a little to Linus file security but makes stupid decisions file security the likes of which I have never seen.
To get BZ1 and BZ2 to work properly I had to copy the installed folder to my desktop.
Any kind of patch installer executable *.exe still requires admin approval which resets file security. Once all patching is done, the file attributes ( right click on the main folder and see properties) for read only have to be dropped.(also with admin approval)

In short, Windows 7 sucks almost as bad as Windows Vista. I have found I have to jump through a lot of hoops with even up to date software.

I think Microsoft will never get it right. They came close with Windows XP. After a taste of Windows 7, I will keep my Windows XP thank you.

Chances are that the file permissions are set to read-only because you burned your BZ2 folder to a CD (which is read-only) and then copied it back to the PC. That problem will happen regardless of the OS you are using. If backing up your BZ2 folder to CD/DVD it is best to zip the entire folder, then burn the compressed version to CD.

Also, libraries makes a lot of sense if you have multiple movie, music, or pictures folders (e.g. if you are using a seperate partition for your media).

A lot of the design decisions made in Win7 appeal to power users like myself.

Vista's security was a joke. They got a little better in W7 from what I have seen, but its still overreaction.

Linux security, as I've only used Linux Mint for probably close to two years, is tight, but its not invasive. You only need the password when doing admin tasks or installing packages from synaptic or the terminal with apt-get.

My opinion: Windows Vista and W7 are not very user-friendly. They have over-the-top security that people may get annoyed with if they don't know how to turn it off. Plus the eye candy is cancer to my eyes. -_- (I make no joke, the GUI I personally find UGLY AS HELL) Like Ghost Writer, I'll stick to my XP thank you very much, even after support is dropped for it.

Windows 7 is easy to use in my opinion. the snap-it feature is really cool.

Turning off the UAC (User Access Control or something like that) is easy. it's only in the user accounts area in the control panel.

Not that easy. Turning off UAC doesn't fix everything, it just fixes UAC. I still have programs that won't install because they need direct access to Programdata.
