Avast home edition is free and scans things like the web, email, my network. It pisses peeps off when unscrupulus software companies give us free software and assume falsely that we grant them permiso to install extra crap on our systems. angry

It's under my understanding that AVG will take advantage of multiple cores while avast will not, which is why I switched. Is there any truth to this?

I've seen a malware like that install through legit ads. Reason why I refuse to go anywhere without NoScript/Firefox.

try Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.

I use it conjunction with the free version of AVG.

This has happened to me a couple of times too 1-2 years ago.  It certainly is malware posing as deceptive and aggressive marketing practices.  It's not really a hard drive crashing destructive type virus (though there's a potential for it), just a poser.  The "software police" have taken notice and have gone after these crooks, last time I heard.  I can vouch for Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. It did the trick/fix, but it felt like it missed a couple more things (PC still seemed slow) , so you have to use additional weps, like aforementioned.  But to be safe, I went ahead and did a full reformat/restore on one of the PC's.

Oh, I got rid of it. I manually deleted the thing and it's registry entries...

I just thought I'd let you know I got it again...
